Martha Reid is the mother of Alex Reid, Doug Reid, Luke Reid, and Jasper Reid. She spent many years battling alcoholism which severely damaged her relationship with her children.
Season 5[]
Alex reaches out to Martha after Luke Harris is born, but Martha does not fully re-enter her life until she hears of Alex's break-up with Charlie Harris. (Season 5, Episode 6). She arrives at Alex's apartment unannounced, ready to help and to get to know her grandson. After she begins behaving erratically, it is discovered that she has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease for which there is no cure (Season 5, Episode 7).
Accepting that her days are numbered, she and Alex go to the family farm to spend some time together. Alex tells her that she is pregnant again and Martha encourages her to reconcile with Charlie because she obviously loves him. She asks Alex to help her die, but Alex is resistant to the idea. Martha decides to take matters into her own hands and swallows a bottle of pills. Alex is unable to revive her. Before she died, Martha left Alex pictures of the two of them together and a note telling Alex how proud she was of her (Season 5, Episode 9).
Alex goes to Charlie for comfort, asking if her mother's spirit is there. Charlie says yes and that she knew her daughter loved her. Martha's ghost is seen watching over them.
